A Trip (again) to Kuala Lumpur

Last week, Microsoft held a workshop called Citizen Services Platform in Maya Hotel - Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Basically it's a concept on how to build solutions in public sector (citizen-related) using sets of Microsoft technology such as SharePoint, CRM, etc. I was there for 3 days with some friends from Microsoft Indonesia and other partner companies. I'll elaborate more about CSP on next posts, right now here are some images captured during the sightseeing.

Today, October 1st 2008 at 00:00:00 AM, is A BIG DAY for me and little Qistan. Such a great moment, Thank You God Almighty for today I'm celebrating both Ied 1029 H and Qistan's 3 years old birthday. Thank You for the moments I've shared so far with my little one, through the good and the bad, the laugh and the cry. May we both grow stronger, matured and faithful to face the world. This is really one tough journey....I just want to share a "time capsule" message for my little one, hopefully you're now able to read and understand English when you're reading this post, here it goes :

"Dear Qistan,

You're now 3 years old. Time passes by so fast that I couldn't believe my eyes when seeing you grow so smart and handsome (chubby like your daddy...ha ha ha). You're now able to communicate better, and even speak in long sentences with many new vocabs. You have more songs to sing like Pelangi, Naik Kereta Api, Naik ke Puncak Gunung, Kukuruyuk, and even counting One to Ten in order, literally in English! You have grown beyond my thought. You have developed yourself in such an unthinkable way. You are just amazing. I feel like the luckiest father, I AM THE LUCKIEST FATHER on earth! Hey, maybe the idea of registering you to the Playgroup school wasn't bad at all :). However my little one, I know I have not been a better father lately. I'm so far from being a perfect father who can give you enough love and compassion, or being an ideal parent like you want me to be, like I HAVE TO BE. For that, I'm truly sorry. I apologize for every skipped important moments, and things that I thought small but turned out BIG for you. I can't never forgive myself when thinking about that, I wish I can make it up to you, or turn back time if I have to. I hope one day, when you're big enough, you will understand everything that had happened to us, and that you will keep on growing stronger, wiser, and better, BETTER THAN YOUR PARENTS. One thing for sure my little one, I will always love and care about you. No matter what have happened, my heart will always be with you for you are my brightest star in my lonely nights. You always shine and protect my way. I learn so much from you. Through you, I can see my own reflection and realize how small and stupid I am. It's my first time to Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, "The Land of Smiles"..that's what they say to describe their country. I traveled there with some colleagues for 4 days to attend a Microsoft's convention called "Public Sector Sales Kick-Off", and of course, to have some good times ;). I've been waiting for this opportunity since Bangkok is one of the big cities in the region that I haven't visited yet. The convention schedule was quite tight, but luckily we still managed to visit a few interesting places such as Siam Center, Suam Lum Night Market, Gems Gallery, and some other shopping places (geezzzzz...shopping is not really my routine). Details will come later..

Last weekend, at Bandung. Toto, the old kings, had returned and cheered up a lil bit of this broken heart. The concert was quite OK for a small venue like Sabuga. The sound and lighting system was just awesome, even though there was a slight problem with the keyboard's sound. They played old and new stuff and the crowd kept on applausing each songs. Rock on, Bandung! Me and some of my friends from Jakarta "managed" to get the VIP seats, and even moved closer to the stage at the end of the show for singing along "Africa" with other fans. Other great songs they played were "Gypsi Train","Rosanna", "Stop Loving You", "Pamela", "Don't Chain My Heart", etc. More concert reviews (in Bahasa) and pictures from Mr. Budi Rahardjo can be found here.

The only drawback is that they didn't play "I will Remember" and "Lea". I had been waiting for these songs throughout the gig, they must have forgotten to put them in the setlist (here goes I whine again..hiks). I noticed a very kewl moment on Greg's solo session. He played "I'll be Over You" in a medley style and the audience sang along with his keyboard-playing. Then suddenly, Steve joined us sang the song together. It was just lovely. Another one was when Steve "happy birthday"-ing each member of the band. It was very funny. We knew Steve fooled all of us when he did that. Big THUMB to the old rockers! But.....still doesn't cure my Incubus tragedy.

Most Anticipated Event in 2008

You guys might think that my most anticipated event in '08 will be something like TechEd or Developer Day or "geeky" stuff like that :D. Well, actually, for me the biggest one will be the Live Concert of Incubus, in ... JAKARTA!! Hell yeah!! Yes sir, THAT Incubus. The one with "I Miss You", "Drive", "Wish You Were Here", "Megalomaniac", etc. Incubus has been one of my greatest influence in improving my musical knowledge. They have this unique ability, or should I say SMART??, in composing their musics as well as songwriting. So, hopefully I'll be able to attend their concert in March '08. Check out my comment on their website here. REALLY looking forward to it, since I missed The Cure's concert in Singapore this year :(( (Dammit!!!).

Yes...finally, the little one experienced the excitement of being in a huge amusement park. We managed to visit Dufan (Dunia Fantasi/ Fantasy World), a famous amusement park located in the northern Jakarta last week. The good thing was, I've got a 50%"discount" for the entry tickets just by showing some printed paper regarding their promotion campaign. 50% is cool enough. Enough with the talk, let's see Qistan in action :)

A week ago, Me and Muliadi attended a VoIP boot camp at Interactive Intelligence office in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The boot camp started at 8:30 am and finished at ... 10:30 pm!!!! What a tough week, felt like going back to college :) We were there for the whole week, luckily we managed to visit some nice places like Genting Highland, Petronas Twin Tower with its Suria KLCC shopping mall, Bukit Bintang area, Golden Screen Cinemas Theater at Town Square (Imbi area), KL Central, and last but not least ... First of all, I'd like to thank my mate Idep for sending me "Barra Barra" mp3 file. It's a very precious stuff and has been my most wanted song.

It's quite rare and can't easily be found in internet. But somehow the dude managed to get it, Bravo Dep! So, what is this Barra Barra song anyway? My first introduction to this song is when I was watching the movie BlackHawk Down. Somewhere in the middle of it, there was a scene with this song in the background. It was very awesome for me to hear this technorock blended with middle east athmosphere. The lyric was arabic, but sung in a heavy and haunting way and closely matched with what the movie was trying to describe. Since then, I've been trying to find and get this song, I could feel the coolness of listening this song while playing Counter Strike or any other computer wargames. Somehow my works always get in the way and I was too busy to acomplish the mission :) . Until a few days ago, I heard the song again in another video clip and I instantly typed in the keyword "Barra Barra" in Youtube and contacted Idep for a little help. Eventualy, both of them were finally able to provide me the live version video clip as well as the mp3. Google Docs and Spreadsheets, Desktop Office Killer?

Another mind-blowing solution, state of the art work have been provided by google at http://docs.google.com/. Introducing, Google Docs & Spreadsheets. By the time I'm writing this post, it's still in beta stage, but I believe this stuff is the real answer to one of the most awaited breakthrough from Google, The Google Office. A year ago, I've been introduced to a web based word processing and spreadsheet service from writely.com, which was eventually acquired by Google. And that was a smart move by Google. I mean, can you predict how big the market in this "office solution" is? My colleagues and I had played around with writely.com for quite some times. We speculated that this could be the killer of what we call now "office desktop application", just a matter of time until the application gets matured, stable, bandwith-friendly, and most important thing is, POPULAR! I still can't do the math and logic on how Google is financing this free service, maybe sooner they will launch a commercial version of this application instead of putting commercial ads on the screen, maybe it has more text editing features, bigger upload file size, more rows and cols in spreadsheets, or maybe it can be our own "Office Server" that can be hosted in our local LAN environment...Imagine how amazing that will be. Or..maybe it will always stay as free service and get subsidized by other Google commercial services. Will it cut cost on those desktop office licenses? I really don't know. Think about people who are mobile and lack of internet connection or working offline at home, is Google also having solution for this kind of people? Do they have to install their "Office Server" locally on their laptops or desktops? That will be another story, but pretty crucial. For semi-technologist like me :D , it's fun enough to watch Web 2.0 works in "real production" and kicks ass too. I mean, the speed (well, it depends on how lucky you are, whether the internet connection is friendly or it sucks as usual), the features, and so on make me feel like I'm working on my usual desktop application. The ability to import and export different document formats are just awesome. It works well with MS Word, MS Excel and Open Office formats, and not to mention everyone's favorite ... PDF. You can also e-mail the document, instead of upload it, to a certain e-mail address so it can be automatically stored in our document directory. The spell checker and suggestions are just amazing, there are many languages provided, including Bahasa Indonesia! Another kewl thing is that we can invite other people to work on the same documents that we have shared. I'm talking about "real" online collaboration here. And guess what? You can also publish your documents to many popular blog sites, how do you think I'm blogging this post? That's rite, mate. I'm publishing it from the very Google Docs and Spreadheets itself, directly (but eventualy I have to go back to blogger.com to add the title manually, hmm why does it happen?). That is KEWL! Two thumbs up to you guys in Google. Keep on producing (or, should I say "acquiring"?), more sweet thing like this in the future, maybe I'll consider to be one of your investors (yeah rite Oki, who do you think you are?). Another Week in Singapore

Yeah, rite. Just visited Singapore and stayed there for a week. Me and some colleagues were sent for a 5-day training at Computer Associates Singapore. It was held on Suntec City Tower 2 and the view to the rest of Suntec area was quite awesome ( especially to the Fountain of Wealth site...and the swimming pool :D ) . We met other Indonesian trainees from Telkomsel, and some of them were my junior back then on college days, and their manager was my senior on high school. So, we spoke lots of sundanese in the class despite others confusion of our "alien language" he he he, Bandung Rules! The hotel we stayed is Peninsula Excelsior which is located closely to Suntec City, City Hall, and Funan Plaza. I managed to visit some other interesting places such as Esplanage Theater, Orchard road, Chinatown, Mustafa Center, Harbourfront, Clarke and Boat Quay. So, here are some pictures from my trip.

It's unlikely for me to try something in "Beta" stage, but I thought to give it a try. Eventually, this Microsoft Live Writer (Beta) works pretty okay. It basically acts as your webblog rich text editor with many editing features in it. It streamlines your "ideas to writing" process and you are not dependent to internet connection since it can also work in offline mode. You can then upload your post as soon as the connection available. What really blows my mind is that I can write a post in a complete "look and feel" of my current webblog theme. You can even save a draft of your blog posting in your PC. All you have to do is following a simple configuration steps after the installation is done. Actually, it will ask for your webblog URL and credential, then wait a few minutes while it's "sucking" your theme (..or CSS) and other mumbo jumbo settings from your webblog, and VOILA! You are ready to blog. Pretty kewl ain't it? You are now able to blog ASAP without having to go to the login page or your webblog site. Yesterday Juned and Me received a little present from Computer Ascociates Indonesia. A cute small pin for having attended a one day ITIL training held a week ago. The training was quite fun, some participants came from Telco and IT industry and we played a serious simulation called Apollo 13, an ITSM Case. The simulation was intended to create an awareness of what ITIL is, how important it is to adopt it, and so on. In the end of training we gained more knowledge and different perspective about the topic, well....sort of :) . Our trainer was Gonzague Patinier, an ITIL Master from Computer Ascociates. He was quite fun and able to give us some real world examples...and sometime he talked like a Singaporean although he's actually a french :) ha ha ... just kiddin'. OK, thanks anyway for the pin.

Better late than never to read this awesome book, the title is For God And Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire by James Yee, Aimee Molloy .

A short review :

Wrongly accused of treason, imprisoned and later discharged, Muslim U.S. Army Chaplain James Yee served at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba-a detention center for War on Terror detainees-for most of 2003 before his Catch-22esque descent into a military inquiry fueled by suspicion of his faith, not evidence of his alleged wrongdoing. A graduate of West Point, Yee later converted to Islam and, upon his assignment to Guantanamo (Gitmo, to the locals), he became the base's third Muslim chaplain in six months, a contentious role that saw him educating soldiers that "Muslim" and "terrorist" were not synonymous, leading prayer services and ministering to detainees. He struck up friendships with the small group of Muslims working on the base, and, unbeknownst to him at the time, his group of friends had been dubbed "Hamas" by other Gitmo soldiers, an anecdote indicative of the accusations of treason that would soon hound him. Sincere almost to the point of naïveté, Yee realizes the distorted view many Westerners have of Muslims, but is constantly surprised he would become a target. A searing indictment of justice gone awry and unchecked, systemic ignorance, Yee's story is sure to stimulate its share of discussion on a volatile subject at a crucial time.

@ ManageFusion .06 - Grand Hyatt Singapore

August 24th, with Daniel, I attended a one day Altiris seminar called ManageFusion .06 . It was a very exhausting experience cause I had to fly early in the morning to Singapore and go back to Indonesia by a night flight at the same day...phewwww, what a day. Anyway, the product itself is going more matured, improved and enhanced. I just can't wait for the next version, Altiris 7.0, to be launched. It's gonna be on .NET 2.0 platform, so hopefully the next Notification Server will perform much better than the recent one. There is also a new kewl stuff from Altiris, the Software Virtualization, which is something that will change the scene of application testing or deployment (...and licensing as well).

@ Singapore Again, Last Week

Here we go again, Me and 2 other colleagues (Franky and Teguh) were sent to Singapore last week to attend an Altiris Asset Management Solution course for 5 days. We stayed at Grand Central Hotel which is located at Kramat Lane street and a few metres away from Orchard street, the main shopping area in Singapore. The course was actually held in a training facility called Knowledge Connection at HarbourFront Centre building. During that 5 days training, I didn't have much chances to visit a lot of places, just shopped at Takashimaya Orchard, People's Park Chinatown, and Mustafa Centre. I really wanted to visit the zoo for the Night Safari event and Marina Bay for the river view, but unfortunatelly there wasn't enough time since I also got a damn flu :( hiks .... Well, maybe next time I'll put them in my priority list ;)

At least 201 people have died and 125 are missing after a tsunami struck Indonesia's Java island, the head of the crisis centre at the health ministry says. Nearly 300 people were reported injured on Tuesday and over 23,000 people have been displaced in the tsunami that followed an earthquake. A French national was among the dead, and two Dutch and four Japanese were among the injured.Two Swedish children were reported missing on Monday, a diplomatic source said. At least three other districts were affected by the waves but Ciamis was the worst-hit by Monday's tsunami. Waves 2 metres high crashed into beach resorts and fishing villages on Indonesia's Java island on Monday.

Regional agencies had sent out tsunami warnings after an undersea earthquake struck 180km off Pangandaran.But the alerts did not reach the victims because Java - which only seven weeks ago was rocked by a powerful quake that killed thousands and left a million homeless - does not have a tsunami warning system.The hardest-hit area appeared to be Pangandaran, a beach resort 270km southeast of Jakarta popular with local and foreign tourists. Witnesses said people shouted "tsunami! tsunami!" and climbed trees or crowded inland mosques as the wave approached.

The 7.2 magnitude quake, whose epicentre was more than 40km under the Indian Ocean, hit at 0819 GMT. A woman told Jakarta-based Radio Elshinta that the waves had come several hundred metres inland at Pangandaran beach. "Waves suddenly came and we ran to the hills. Four people from my group are still missing. Many small hotels were destroyed and boats have been thrown into hotels," she said. Tremors were felt in high-rise buildings in Jakarta for at least one minute, prompting many to flee their offices. The nearby Cilacap refinery owned by state oil company Pertamina was unaffected."The refinery is operating as usual. There were rising waves, but now the water has receded," said a Pertamina official.

In May, an earthquake near the central Java city of Yogyakarta killed more than 5,700 people.Indonesia's 17,000 islands sprawl along a belt of intense volcanic and seismic activity, part of what is called the "Pacific Ring of Fire". The country was the worst hit by the December 26, 2004 tsunami that killed 220,000 across Asia.

This posting is actually inspired by latest Adam Sandler's movie, Click. In order to comprehend my reasoning, you should watch the movie first. Ok, let's get to the point. Can you guys (especially who come from the same generation with me) tell me what will be the kewlest song to be played in a wedding party or a tv shows like "Berpacu Dalam Melodi", "Nostalgia", etc when we all are 50 or 60 year old? The song must be a kind of everlasting ones, like Frank Sinatra's New York New York or Jim Morrison's Light My Fire or John Lennon's Imagine....Well? From my personal point of view, which has already been approved by Adam Sandler in his movie :), the song is called Linger by The Cranberries. I wonder where they are now? All I know that I'm pretty sure that Dolores appeared in a scene of Click performing this song in a big band style (yes you can see lots of violins there), and she had this "old lady" kind of make up. Just Watched Adam Sandler's Click

I always be a big fan of Adam Sandler's movies. Last night, after finishing the whole 2nd session of Lost, I managed to watch latest Adam Sandler's movie called Click. It's a typical Adam's movie, hillarious, witty, and lots of moral messages in it. Too bad Rob Schneider didn't show up on the movie :) . So, this is a little review as I quote from IMDB :

Last weekend I managed to attend an airsoft skirmish in Bandung, met Yudha, Ricky, Berny, etc. The skirmish was held on a highland called p*n*l*t , a perfect place to run a kind of Hamburger Hill scenario. We were too busy playing and didn't realize that nobody took any snapshots of the action :( , the game itself was very kewl, an intense 2 deathmatchs session and very exhausting :) .... well, it's good for me since I'm really lack of sport. Anyway, just wanna say I'm glad to see a good development in the community. The zombie issue isn't a big deal anymore, new comers and veterans get along, brotherhood is in the air! Yogyakarta Earthquake On May 27, 2006

Once again, a heavy earthquate at 6 richter scale hit the city of Yogyakarta at Central Java. The death toll is up to 5000 people. I send you my deep simpathy and condolence to my friends, brothers and sisters, who still fight and survive to recover from this disaster.

Where is The Sportmanship?

I've been hanging around with the Bandung airsofters community for a couple of months and things were great actually. The skirmishes were fun and the brotherhood was in the air. But things change a little bit when we have some new comers from ... I dunno, never met and got acquainted either. These guys act like superheroes and have lack of sportmanship, which is the most important aspect of an airsoft skirmish. I don't know about their standard rules of "hit", "blind shot", "freeze", etc. But at least if they're new comers and play in our playground they should have asked and followed our version of skirmish rules. I feel a bad atmosphere about it and start thinking on moving from skirmish player to shooting field player. There will be a time when a "hit dispute" ended up in a bad debate or even worst, physical contact. I don't wanna be a part of any of that. I can't stand watching one of my mates got a brutal blind shot from a very close distance by these so called "zombies". Why do they act like we are enemies to be slaughtered? Are we just some dumb target practices? What are they trying to proove? That they have better equipments than we have? Fancier gears? Faster fps? It's just a stupid wargame, why can't they just ease up and have fun about it. Start with admitting that they got hit by a stupid plastic BB. That part is fun too! That part is a way to educate and practise us to be an honest person. Isn't that kewl? Isn't it kewl to be honest? Or do they have different agenda? Hmmm.... I think I should go to this site www.zombiesurvivalguide.com.

Great Weekend in Singapore

Last weekend was great! Me and my Support Manager, Daniel, and some friends from a client visited Singapore for a vacation and Altiris study case. It was very amazing to be in this lovely country. We were amazed by the advanced technology they use in their public sectors. Hotel Grand Central was the place where we stayed. It is located in Kramat Lane road, close to the main shopping area Orchard Road. It was like a neverending shopping malls, gotta have lots of cash if you want to enjoy Singapore completely. Our main attraction was Sentosa Island, which is a small island located in south of Singapore. We took MRT and cable cars to cross to the island instead of using taxi or any other public transportation. The view from cable car was excellent, you can see the whole island from this kewl vehicle. Sentosa island has many interesting spots, the Calberg Skytower, Merlion statue, Beach and Fort Siloso, Underwater world, etc. We also visited Chinatown to buy some souvenirs which was amazingly cheap compared to other areas in Singapore. And yes, Sim Lim Square was also a great place to bargain many "hi-end" electronic devices to the lowest price that money can buy :), hey what the hell, we Indonesians are known as Hardcore Bargainers by Singaporean merchants. Also got lost in Little India when we were trying to find some good clothings, the weather was really hot and we couldn't move our legs anymore...yes, dehydration is a soldier's worst enemy, I couldn't agree more! I should have brought a hydropack instead of buying bottles of mineral water. Well, enough of this comment...Pictures Paint Thousand Words... here they are (on next posts)...

Google, with the cooperation of prestigious libraries, has been digitizing books to make them findable. The practice excites futurists but angers some publishers. Of necessity, digitization creates virtual copies. The publishers claim that such duplication violates copyright, even if the book’s content is hidden from the public. The New York Public Library, one of Google’s partners in the project, recently hosted a public debate on the subject.
It was while attending that debate that my discomfort with the hype surrounding an emerging genre of web development turned into a full-blown hate-on.
The big room was packed. There were more ticket holders than chairs. Yet the seat in front of me remained empty. Each time a hopeful standee approached the empty chair—and this happened every few nanoseconds—the poor schmoe seated next to it had to apologetically explain, “Sorry, the seat is occupied.”
It soon became clear that the kindly schmoe was reserving the seat, not for a friend or colleague, but for a stranger who had imposed that duty on him. While the kindly fellow defended the other man’s throne against a steady stream of resentful ticket holders, the stranger was off somewhere knocking back the library’s free champagne. I wondered what kind of jackass would ask someone he didn’t know to save his seat for thirty minutes at an oversold event. When he finally arrived, I found out.

A taste of ass

“Were you at the Web 2.0 conference?” the arriving man asked, by way of thanking the other for saving his place. The kindly schmoe signified in the negative. This was all the encouragement our man needed to launch into an adjective-rich and fact-poor monologue that was loud enough for half the room to hear.
It soon appeared that “Web 2.0” was not only bigger than the Apocalypse but also more profitable. Profitable, that is, for investors like the speaker. Yet the new gold rush must not be confused with the dot-com bubble of the 1990s:
“Web 1.0 was not disruptive. You understand? Web 2.0 is totally disruptive. You know what XML is? You’ve heard about well-formedness? Okay. So anyway—”
And on it ran, like a dentist’s drill in the Gulag.
At first I tolerated the pain by mentally modifying the famous scene from Annie Hall:

HIM: “I teach a venture capitalist workshop, so I think my insights into XML have a great deal of validity.”
ME: “Oh, really? Because I happen to have Mr. Bray right here.”

Later I gnawed my knuckles. At some point, in a kind of fever, I may have moaned. Blessedly, at last the lights dimmed and the night’s real speakers redeemed the evening.
But the ass whose braying I’d endured left a bad taste.

Less noise, more signal

Let us now define and disclaim. The jerk at the library event was in love with his own noise, and the problem with noise is that it interferes with signals. What is the signal? What, if anything, does “Web 2.0” mean? What is the good thing that the hype risks obscuring?
Well, there are several good things, it seems to me.
Some small teams of sharp people—people who once, perhaps, worked for those with dimmer visions—are now following their own muses and designing smart web applications. Products like Flickr and Basecamp are fun and well-made and easy to use.
That may not sound like much. But ours is a medium in which, more often than not, big teams have slowly and expensively labored to produce overly complex web applications whose usability was near nil on behalf of clients with at best vague goals. The realization that small, self-directed teams powered by Pareto’s Principle can quickly create sleeker stuff that works better is not merely bracing but dynamic. As 100 garage bands sprang from every Velvet Underground record sold, so the realization that one small team can make good prompts 100 others to try.
The best and most famous of these new web products (i.e. the two I just mentioned) foster community and collaboration, offering new or improved modes of personal and business interaction. By virtue of their virtues, they own their categories, which is good for the creators, because they get paid.
It is also good for our industry, because the prospect of wealth inspires smart developers who once passively took orders to start thinking about usability and design, and to try to solve problems in a niche they can own. In so doing, some of them may create jobs and wealth. And even where the payday is smaller, these developers can raise the design and usability bar. This is good for everyone. If consumers can choose better applications that cost less or are free, then the web works better, and clients are more likely to request good (usable, well-designed) work instead of the usual schlock.

Of this they spin

In addition to favoring simpler solutions built by leaner teams, the stuff labeled “Web 2.0” tends to have technological commonalities.
On the back end, it is most often powered by open source technologies like PHP or (especially) Ruby on Rails.
On the front end, it is mainly built with web standards—CSS for layout, XML for data, XHTML for markup, JavaScript and the DOM for behavior—with a little Microsoft stuff thrown in.
When web standards with a little Microsoft stuff thrown in are used to create pages that can interact with the server without refreshing, the result is web apps that feel peppy and, dare we say it, Flash-like. In a white paper that actually got read, writer/consultant Jesse James Garrett named what I’ve just described. He called it AJAX, and the acronym not only took, it helped interactivity powered by these technologies gain traction in the marketplace.
Here is where the spinners bedazzle the easily confused. Consider this scenario:
Steven, a young web wiz, has just celebrated his bar mitzvah. He received a dozen gifts and must write a dozen thank-you notes. Being webbish, he creates an on-line “Thank-You Note Generator.” Steven shows the site to his friends, who show it to their friends, and soon the site is getting traffic from recipients of all sorts of gifts, not just bar mitzvah stuff.
If Steven created the site with CGI and Perl and used tables for layout, this is the story of a boy who made a website for his own amusement, perhaps gaining social points in the process. He might even contribute to a SXSW Interactive panel.
But if Steven used AJAX and Ruby on Rails, Yahoo will pay millions and Tim O’Reilly will beg him to keynote.

Who weeps for AJAX?

We pause but a moment to consider two AJAX-related headaches.
The first afflicts people who make websites. Wireframing AJAX is a bitch. The best our agency has come up with is the Chuck Jones approach: draw the key frames. Chuck Jones had an advantage: he knew what Bugs Bunny was going to do. We have to determine all the things a user might do, and wireframe the blessed moments of each possibility.
The second problem affects all who use an AJAX-powered site. If web signifiers and conventions are still in their infancy, then AJAX-related signifiers and conventions are in utero. I am still discovering features of Flickr. Not new features—old ones. You find some by clicking in empty white space. This is like reading the news by pouring ACME Invisible Ink Detector on all pieces of paper that cross your path until you find one that has words on it.
I am not knocking Flickr. I love Flickr. I wish I were as gifted as the people who created it. I’m merely pointing out complex design problems that will not be solved overnight or by a single group. In Ma.gnolia, which is now in beta, we used small icons to indicate that additional actions could be taken and to hint at what those actions might be. We succeeded to the extent that 16px by 16px drawings can communicate such concepts as “you may edit these words by clicking on them.”
These problems and others will be solved, most likely by someone reading this page. One points to these issues mainly to dent a swelling of unthinking euphoria. We have been down this road before.

Bubble, bubble

When I started designing websites, if the guy on the plane next to me asked what I did, I had to say something like “digital marketing” if I wanted to avoid the uncomprehending stare.
A few years later, if I told the passenger beside me I was a web designer, he or she would regard me with a reverence typically reserved for Stanley-Cup-winning Nobel Laureate rock stars.
Then the bubble burst, and the same answer to the same question provoked looks of pity and barely concealed disgust. I remember meeting a high-rolling entrepreneur in the early 2000s who asked what I did. I should have told him I hung around playgrounds, stealing children’s lunch money. He would have had more respect for that answer.
I hated the bubble. I hated it when Vanity Fair or New York Magazine treated web agency founders like celebrities. I hated that mainstream media and the society it informs either ignored the web or mistook it for a high-stakes electronic version of the fashion industry.
When the bubble burst, these same geniuses decided the web was of no interest at all. Funny, to me it was more interesting than ever. To me it was people and organizations publishing content that might not otherwise have seen light. It was small businesses with realistic goals delivering value and growing. It was traditional publishers finding their way into a new digital medium, helped by folks like you and me. It was new ways of talking and sharing and loving and selling and healing and being. Hardly dull.
Eventually the uninformed stopped seeing a wasteland and started seeing bloggers, by which they meant only those bloggers who wrote about politics, most often from the extreme left or right. The web was “back” even though it had never left. (Of course, the fifth time you hear Wolf Blitzer say “blogger” or ask, “what do the bloggers have to tell us about these still-unfolding events?” the joke is stale and you wish those who don’t get the web would go back to ignoring it.)
But nothing, not even the rants of political bloggers, was as exciting as the scent of money. As the first properly valued “Web 2.0” properties began to find buyers, a frenzy like the old one popped hideously back to life. Yahoo spent how much? Google bought what? Here was real blood in the water.
But how to persuade the other sharks in the tank that this blood feast was different from the previous boom-and-bust? Easy: Dismiss everything that came before as “Web 1.0.”

It’s only castles burning

To you who are toiling over an AJAX- and Ruby-powered social software product, good luck, God bless, and have fun. Remember that 20 other people are working on the same idea. So keep it simple, and ship it before they do, and maintain your sense of humor whether you get rich or go broke. Especially if you get rich. Nothing is more unsightly than a solemn multi-millionaire.
To you who feel like failures because you spent last year honing your web skills and serving clients, or running a business, or perhaps publishing content, you are special and lovely, so hold that pretty head high, and never let them see the tears.As for me, I’m cutting out the middleman and jumping right to Web 3.0. Why wait?

Danish television called me just now, asking if I could comment on the cartoon commotion. Apparently the Danish Embassy is evacuating its staff in Jakarta. I said "No, I cannot." So many people have said so many words, and mine will be no different. All the things about Denmark by people who do not know Denmark, and all the things about Muslims by people who do not know Muslims. I know Muslims, I know Denmark, and I really have no desire to say anything.

All I say is 'Jeg Elsker Danmark,' I love Denmark. Those words I remember from my childhood days. And I do remember that I love that country and its people, back when I was 8 to 11 years old. I remember the gentle hills around Gileleje and the sea dunes, the wonderful springtime at Hellerup and Helsingor, and of course Tivoli Park in Copenhagen. The people who were always smiling, Mikkel Stensballe who played football at Kobenhavns Boldklub, Jutte Hoy-Petersen who was so pretty and sent me things through my university days, Fru Tachau the lovely lady who took care of us and our apartment at Trondhjemsgade. And yes, Princess Margrethe who took bicycle rides with us at Langelinie on Sundays.

The Danes were always nice to each other and nice to us, Muslims and Indonesians and whatever, people from places of which they know nothing. But they knew love, and we knew love. We had love in my family and we had love with our neighbors and our schoolmates and even our schoolteachers.

I have never really been to Jutland (Jylland to you now, its original Danish term), only passed by. I didn’t know if they are so very different from the Danes in Sjaelland or Fyn or anywhere. Danes were always gentle, tolerant, minded their own business. They don't shout cartoons to make people angry and hide behind lame excuses of freedom of speech.

Danes are so kind and compassionate, or they were when I was a child. So how come this newspaper on Jylland comes up with the idea of publishing cartoons just for the sake of irritating people? Like the naughty kids on the other side of the tracks who used to throw little stones at poor people and see how mad they got. Have those naughty kids grown up to be nasty newspaper editors?

I don’t think the cartoonists are that guilty. They make their living trying to be funny. They will draw anything to make people laugh and make themselves a bit of money. But the editors should have better sense. They publish newspapers to inform and to enlighten, not to deform and to endanger.

And why does not the Danish government take its rightful place as the captain of the ship and guide it through the wide open seas? Maybe the people in Jylland have no idea what is like in other parts of the world, where people are oppressed and persecuted and bombed, and happen to have different religions. I am sure these Danes do not know what they are doing, so for heaven’s sake, somebody tell them please. If you want to test freedom of speech, try it on yourselves.

Have the Danes changed, or is this just another case of a few bad apples? If so, please sort them out, and return the beauty that is Denmark. In the words of Hans Christian Andersen,

You land where I was born, and where my home is,
From where my roots derive, my world extends,
Where language is as soft as Mother's voice is,
And with my heartbeats like sweet music blends.
You windswept Danish strand,
For swans to build their nest in,
Green island home on earth, for heart to rest in,
'Tis you I love - Denmark, my native land!

Somebody should tell the Danes they are a beautiful people. Do not get entangled in the posturing that causes so much malevolence. Such a shame to see Denmark provoked by powers who seek to build world tensions. I do not want to be the one to tell them. I love Denmark, I used to think I am partly Danish inside, childhood memories never go away. But now I wonder.
Are you pushing me away, driving me back to find something evil in my heritage?

Sorry, my Danish friends, you are not succeeding in making me hate you. I love you and I always will. But I now am sooo ashamed of my fellow Danes. So ignorant, so insensitive, and now so defensive. Please, come back...
